Formats
Classical — long games, often 90+ minutes per player, sometimes over multiple days. Rapid — faster games, typically 15–25 minutes per player. Blitz — very fast, usually 3–5 minutes per player. Most club-organized opens are Swiss format: everyone plays a fixed number of rounds, paired by score rather than knockout.
Ratings
FIDE is the international rating, KNSB is the Dutch national rating, and SGA ratings are specific to this Amsterdam region. A tournament being "rated" means results count toward one or more of these — it doesn't mean you need an existing rating to enter. Most opens accept unrated players.
Do I need to be a club member?
Usually not — most open tournaments accept non-members, sometimes at a slightly higher entry fee. Season-long series run by a specific club (like Best of the West or the Kattenburger Open) are typically more open to outside players for individual rounds than internal club competitions are. Always check the organizer's own registration page — entry requirements are theirs to set, not ours.
